Big milestone birthday this year for Téa! She has been looking forward to this birthday for a while. Being 12 means she gets to go to the Temple and do baptisms for the dead, she's done with Primary, she gets to go to Young Women's class on Sundays and activities once a week, and she's one year closer to becoming a teenager. It's crazy to think how fast the last 12 years has gone since this cute freckled girl entered our lives.
Here are a few facts about our preteen:
-She still loves soccer, still playing for Arsenal and I'm still her coach. She is almost done with her second year of club soccer.
-Her best friend is Hannah Smith and they do everything together!
-She has been in student council all year in 6th grade and has loved it. Not only was she accepted by the teachers to be in student council, she was elected by her class to be a class representative. Only one girl and boy from each 6th grade class were chosen. This has helped her step out of her comfort zone and be a leader.
-She is an amazing sister to Piper and Calista. Sure they fight (mostly just Téa and Calista) but she is a great sister when it really matters.
-This kid gets so many babysitting jobs that she has to turn some down. There are really only three families she watches but it has helped her feel more grown up earning spending money and learning to put some away for savings and tithing.
-She has matured a lot in the last year. I've been so impressed with her teacher. Mrs. O'Dell has taken Téa's love of learning and turned it into a desire to become a teacher. We'll see if that changes or not. Maybe this is the year that most kids change into a budding adult, but for my kid it has been a noticeable change that I've loved witnessing. I'm excited for what's to come.
-She is a very caring person, has compassion for everyone and is very empathetic.
-She is excited/anxious for junior high in 3 months!
Since Téa's birthday was on a school day we didn't have a lot of time to go out and celebrate. She chose to eat out at her favorite restaurant, Cafe Rio. It was delicious as always.
Piper gave up her princess crown for Téa to wear for breakfast.
Mark made Stonehenge with the presents.
Look at that long hair. She said she will only cut it when she can actually sit on it.
She humored me with a few outside photos before the bus came.
I guess she was not as accommodating after the tenth picture.
After dinner we came home for ice cream cake. Oh, that's another thing to add about
her: she hates cake and most frostings. Ice cream cake is probably the
only stuff she'll eat. Also, Piper is learning to photo bomb. It's awesome.
The rest of the photos I just had to ad. Mark found this awesome birthday candle so we documented the progression of it. Don't miss Téa's face in each one. It's great.
The lighting of the candle...
The beginning of the fireworks...
Fireworks continue but the lotus flower opens with more lit candles... (Téa still isn't sure if this candle thing is a good idea or if it will light the house on fire).
Fireworks end and the lotus flower slowly turns with lit candles while "Happy Birthday" plays, sounding similar to a music box...(notice Téa isn't scared of it anymore)
It was by far the best candle ever! We could have watched it a lot longer but with all that fire the cake was starting to melt on top. Big breath in...
Big breath out...
Téa's favorite thing is to spend time with her family. I'd call her birthday a success since she got to spend the entire evening together with us (without any Bishopric meetings or soccer practices) opened presents, ate Cafe Rio and ice cream cake with the coolest candle in town. Friday night Mark and I will take Téa and a group of friends up into the canyon and have a campfire dinner, roast some marshmallows and let them explore nature. We found the best place in American Fork Canyon that has a fire pit next to a small river. It's beautiful. We've been to the same spot so many times with family for FHE activities.
