One of the big projects in 6th grade at Snow Springs is the Time Machine project. The kids work in groups for almost a month putting together a 5 minute Time Machine play. I'm not sure how the process of choosing their character went, but I believe each kid had to pick a prominent character from world history (and not all of them are actual people; some being gods from different religions). Each group had to have characters from different time periods. Téa chose to be Octavia the Younger. I had to look her up, so don't feel bad if you don't know who that is. In Téa's group she had Mulan, Queen Elizabeth I, Ra, a famous U.S. General and some Asian guy who ripped peoples arms off. (I didn't pay attention very well during their presentation).
The big day came for the final presentation and I actually had the costume all ready to go a few days in advance. Go me! I think it turned out pretty well. Coming up with a female Roman costume wasn't hard at all. You'd be surprised at how many YouTube videos there are when you search 'how to make a toga out of a bed sheet'. We added a little gold braided rope for a belt and I whipped together a cute cold braided headband and bam! you've got yourself a Roman costume.
It took forever to curl her hair...at 6:30 in the morning!
I told her to get in character and this is what I got...attitude.
Since I work at the same school my kids go to it was super easy to sneak into the gym and watch during her presentation. It was such a huge production. Each group of 6th graders had to create a set for their time machine, write a script bringing all the characters together and somehow fit in a history lesson during the short skit/presentation. All the classes in the school could sign up for a time frame to come into the gym and watch a few of the presentations. There were some really hilarious ones, including Téa's. I wish I would have taken a picture of the set her group created. It turned out really well. This was the last huge project for Téa and soon she will be done with elementary school and off to middle school. Yikes!
