Battle of the Books

In sixth grade Téa heard about a new school program called 'Battle of the Books'. She knew right away she wanted to participate. This kid loves to read. Each grade had a list of 20 books to read and students who wanted to participate made teams of five kids. Near the end of the school year, teams would compete in a battle and test their knowledge about the books they read. Not every student was required to read every book but of course Téa wanted to! She wanted to make sure her team would be ready to answer any question from any book.


Téa worked hard to read every book and was super excited about the battles. Each grade had their own battles during a two week period and the top scoring teams of each grade (3rd-6th) would compete in an assembly in front of the whole school. Téa and her team did awesome and won the 6th grade battles which meant she and her team would have the final battle against the 5th graders at the assembly.

The day came and I got to help keep score during the battle (benefit of working at the school as an aide!). Téa and her team of boys did awesome. They won, which meant her team would represent Snow Springs Elementary at the district level Battle of the Books. Kind awesome, right?

The top team from each school in the school district came on a Saturday morning to battle it out.The questions all started out the same: "In which book did..." and the teams had 30 seconds to discuss and come up with the book title and author. I couldn't believe how obscure some of the questions were. Téa and her team did well, winning 3 of their 4 battles.

Here's the group after the district battles. These guys had a lot of fun throughout the year with this Battle of the Books thing. They got excited about reading and they had a good opportunity to show off their knowledge at the district level.
