Seeing as how this is pretty much a journal for our family I had to blog about an important milestone we hit as a family. It might not seem like a big thing but for us it is very special. A step in the right direction.
Last week we finished reading the First Book of Nephi in the Book of Mormon as a family. We started reading the Book of Mormon as a family back in January 2011. We read only 1 or 2 verses a night together, depending on who is reading. We missed some nights and sometimes one parent was missing but we have kept to our goal to read the scriptures together. It has helped Calista with her reading. For Téa, who is already a strong reader, she’s gained an understanding of the language of the scriptures and asks questions which gets her thinking about what is being taught. It’s so fun to hear Piper repeat the words we tell her (she adds in her own words sometimes, too). A lot of the time Piper will start off the verse “And it came to pass” and then wait for us to really begin the verse. Funny how half the time she is right!
The girls love seeing our progress so I make bookmarks where they can cross off the verses they read.
I did the math and it took us about 600 days to read 618 verses. At this rate it will take us something like 13 years to finish the entire Book of Mormon. But, thankfully as the girls get older we can read more verses at a time and cut that down to at least half that many years.
