Bespectacled Beauty

We found out last week that someone in our family needs glasses.  Badly.  It started about 2 weeks ago when Calista asked Mark why the words on his iPad were fuzzy.  Then he had her try and read a book a little farther than arms length for her.  She couldn’t read any of it.  Couldn’t even make out a letter on the page.  I’d been wondering lately if something was wrong with her eyes.  She still mixes up her d’s and b’s and she really struggles when reading scriptures at night.  And I noticed her moving books closer and farther away from her face quite often.  Turns out it’s because she is farsighted.  And she has one eye that continually focuses in and out.  Untreated, she would eventually develop a lazy eye.

Thankfully, Calista knows a lot of people who wear glasses all the time.  Friends and cousins, to name a few.  After her eye exam I went through all the people she knows who wear glasses and you could see the light bulb going on in her brain.  She new a lot of people and I guess their glasses are just a part of who they are that she didn’t realize they wore them all the time.  It made her feel so much better.

We took all the time she wanted to pick out frames at Costco.  I think she tried on ALL of them.  I was fine with it.  Even Piper got into it.  I think that helped Calista as well.  I didn’t try to sway her at all with her decision.  Which, by the way, about killed me.  I wanted to give my two-cents worth on all of them, but I refrained.  It was a growing moment for me.

Turns out I didn’t need to persuade her at all with a cute pair of frames.  She knew instantly the style she preferred.  So here she is!  The new and improved Calista.

She wanted to make sure I got a side view of her frames.  One of the reasons she liked these so much were the blue butterflies on the sides.  (Guess I should have zoomed in a little more, huh?)

Mark and I are making more of an effort now to make sure we wear our glasses when reading or doing things on the computer so she can see us with them on more often.  She has to wear them all the time but we figured it might help the transition.  Her first day of school with them turned out to be not a big deal.  I think I was more nervous than she was.  Although my nerves stem from the possibility of her losing or breaking them.  Calista is always losing things and doesn’t keep track of things like  I do.  Simply put, she’s not psychotic like her mother.

She did fine job selecting those frames! And she looks adorable to boot. I sure hope the glasses help. Surgery was not a fun option for Ashton, but it did help his eyes tremendously.

She's such a doll. I'm glad it was an easy transition. :)
