January Ice Skating - The Pond and Backyard Experience

Life gets busy, especially being a working mom. I had to re-prioritize my life and put the most important things first, and last year blogging got put on the back burner. (Thankfully, blogger has a nifty publishing cheater setting where you can change the publish date. How cool is that?) I’d like to think I’ve learned a lot in the last year in the way of priorities. The past year helped me to see what’s really important. We had a great year and did lots of fun things as a family. Each kid worked hard, played harder and grew in so many ways. Mark and I have worked hard and played harder as well! I hope to capture all that on this blog so my family can look back through the years and say “hey, I remember when…”. This blog catches just a glimpse of our lives here in the Randall house. We have ups and downs, but we go through them together and (hopefully) come out all right in the end. Enjoy the ride. My family means the world to me and this is my journal I continue to do even though most people don't read blogs anymore!

(January 10, 2015)

Some friends of ours in our ward asked Mark about how he maintains the ice in our rink in the backyard. Turns out the husband wanted to see if it would be difficult to somehow treat the ice in the pond behind his house in the water area in our neighborhood. His backyard is just feet away from the wetlands and there is the perfect rectangular area of ice/water surrounded by the willow reeds. Andrew was able to reach the area with a garden hose and resurface it enough to get it really smooth. The Wilsons invited us over for an epic game of hockey that had other neighbors joining in! So much fun!

Piper’s favorite thing was pulling anyone who wanted a ride with the hockey sticks. Here she is pulling Jake Olsen.

I guess I didn’t take many pictures. This was the best one I had of the area and some of those who joined in the fun.

I think Piper pulled Callum (Andrew and Moriah’s son) for over an hour.

Just seeing the joy in their faces is worth all the labor of trying to maintain the ice rink in our backyard. Andrew did a great job keeping the pond area by his house smooth and skate-worthy.

Yesterday was our last day of skating for the season. So sad. We had a fabulous time. Unfortunately, this winter was terrible for ice skating. It was abnormally warm, which ended our skating season a whole lot sooner than expected.

It was all about working on tricks and spins.

Oh, and a little ice dancing…

Piper doesn’t always like to skate for very long, but occasionally she’ll stay for a few hours if we are all out together.

I love this guy. He works so hard each winter to create family memories on the rink. This guy could NOT be a better father/husband. Building and maintaining the rink isn’t easy, especially when it’s at night and single digits outside.

These people are my world.

The rink brings us all together, even siblings who don’t always want to be around each other.

Today Mark went out on the ice to check it and…fell through! Guess the rink was done for the season. We had family over that afternoon and the cousins found it entertaining to walk in the freezing cold water.

Peter thought is was awesome.

It was sad to say goodbye to the rink. We didn’t get nearly enough time with it this year. Oh well. There’s always next year…
